New Growth 2018-2022
New Growth documents plants in and around my home along with several controlled environments (parks, botanical gardens, cemeteries, etc.). These images depict the edge of nature (or how we perceive a natural state) with an emphasis on seasonal and artificial light along with the barriers between the natural world and the built environment. They highlight my fascination with greenery and along with a desire to remind the viewer that they are looking at something photographic. Visual interruptions play heavily in many of the images; curtains, shadows, and other elements hinder details, letting the subject be transformed through the camera. Light is used strategically to produce images that reveal only partial information; they are at best half-truths, giving the viewer space for their own experience and interpretation.
